While at West Point last fall I visited a newly developed historical site at Fort Montgomery about 5 to 8 miles down the Hudson River from West Point . The people working at the site , both paid and volunteers , are working and caring people . Fort Montgomery was a defensive site placed above a turn on the Hudson River before West Point as the British came up river from New York City . The Americans gave up the site with very little struggle as the British land and attacked the fort from the land side and defenses were set to defend the river . At the site much archaeological work has been performed around the site and it is well marked . The trench and artillery line over looking the river has been excavated . If in the area I suggest a visit . Those who live near Fort Montgomery should think about joining the efforts to preserve this Rev War defensive site . Tony
