My grandfather a Corporal 1/5th South Lancs was attached to Town Major at Ypres in Feb 1917 and badly wounded by shell June 1917 ay Ypres Prison....My research has failed to turn up what he might have been doing detached to Town Major, what Town Major's job was etc.
can anyone help ? Or direct me to where I might find the answers

    Hi,

The military Town mayor would have had command over the town. Troops going through the town or in billets in the town would have been directed by him or his staff as to where they could billet or could pass through safely. The town itself was under military control, all civilians having been "deported" during April-May 1915.
You could say that he had a care-taker role.
