WWI Veteran Nurse Lies Under Red Rhododendron

I found Marie on flickr ... but I can't find out anything about her work with the American Indians .... !

This woman had a real following. Her name was Marie Blodget MORRIS. She is the only one, or one of very few at Blodgett Cemetery, Blodgett, Benton County, Oregon that spelled her name Blodget. I have it straight from a Blodgett descendant that it was the way almost all of them spelled it 3 to 5 generations ago. When the Post Office was applied for in about 1914, Blodget was approved but spelled as Blodgett. After about 3 generations or so, people named Blodget or descended from Blodget, just started spelling it with two Ts.

Marie was born 1886. It isn't on her marker probably because no one was exactly sure at the time the marker was made. She was in WWI as a nurse, and when the war was over worked most of the rest of her life with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. When she passed away, apparently in Arizona, the Colville Indian Tribe of Washington State sent an entire train car to Arizona to attend her funeral. She must have made a powerful and loving impact on many lives.
