It says that he was a Flight Engineer, but also that he sometimes "also acted as the bomb-aimer in his crew". I thought these were highly specialised roles and not interchangeable; anyone "swapping" would not have the necessary training. Can anyone throw any light on this? Is it just sloppy reporting?
I noticed that as well, AR, but got distracted. Perhaps attacking targets in Northern France, relatively close to England, prevented jamming of navigational aids so he was instructed to drop when the signal (GEE-H perhaps?) was received? It is odd though and certainly not something I've come across before.
