    Old Eastbournian Wing Cmmdr Roland 'Bee' Beamont CBE DSO* DFC*, outstanding fighter pilot and, later, test pilot who fought in the Battle for France, the Battle of Britain, against the doodle-bug scourge and on D-Day. The first Briton to exceed the speed of sound and author of nine books on aviation. He died in 2001
