My great-grandfather served in the Confederate forces. I recently came across my great-grandmother's application for a widow's pension. He died in the 1890s, yet it was 1926 before she applied for, and received a small pension. It can't have amounted to much. I wonder why it took so long? Did Union soldiers' widows have to wait all those years as well?
