Lieutenant Bushnell showed exceptional bravery by remaining with his platoon after being wounded. He refused evacuation until he received a second wound, the nature of which demanded his immediate return to the rear. A number of extensive wounds on the left side of his body, in the region of the left shoulder, were caused by shrapnel, and when removed to the hospital he was in a state of shock.
