The bomber will always get through?

    Even in WW1, there were air-raids on the the Britsh mainland towns and cities by the Germans but I didnt know that many Zeppelins and later on Gotha bombers were shot down. With this in mind, why was the mindset developed that the bomber alone would be a war winner? Was it evidence from the Spanish civil war or was their a flaw in allied (and german) strategic thinking?
