This site provides access to a digitised version of The Stars and Stripes, a newspaper published between February 1918-June 1919 by the American Expeditionary Force of the US Army based in France to strengthen morale amongst servicemen. It forms part of the Library of Congress American Memory online Library. Important content includes examples of military propaganda, writings and poetry from First World War soldiers, accounts of womens' activities on the home front and contemporary advertisements. In addition to a searchable database of the newspaper, the site also offers background information on the force, a timeline of the First World War and a brief history of its publication and importance for understanding World War One. This includes coverage of issues relating to censorship.
