This is the true story of an overcrowded POW camp during WWII, located high on a hill near the city of Shumen, Bulgaria, and of the men who represented the eleven nations that were restrained here.

Written by the combined efforts of two men; a son of a former American POW from this camp and an avid professor from the University of Shumen, Bulgaria—though living on opposite ends of the world, and having never physically met, brought their passion together for a fact based story of both sides of the war during this turbulent time. Supported by their shared research, the reader will be taken through the POWs daily activities that were carefully recorded in their personal diaries and journals, along with a comprehensive timeline highlighting all major events –from their point of captivity to their liberation by the Russian Red Army, and of their final exodus to Egypt, seven months before war’s end.
Not all of Bulgaria went willingly into war with the Axis. There was an underground movement at work as well, and the stories of those brave partisans’ and their risk in fighting behind enemy lines for the Fatherland Front of Bulgaria are also told.
The day to day hardships experienced by both sides, and of the beginning of a revolution and a new change of government, in Bulgaria, long before the war in Europe is officially over.
This collective project has been carefully researched and highly documented with many never before seen photographs, also included is a complete list of all downed American & Common Wealth planes between 1943-44 in Bulgaria and the surrounding areas controlled by the Bulgaria, from which these prisoners of war in originated, along with a complete camp roster of all the men held at this camp.
