Robert McNeely (c.1883-1915) — of Monroe, Union County, N.C. Member of North Carolina state house of representatives, 1908-10; U.S. Consul in Aden, 1915, died in office 1915. While en route to Aden as a passenger on the British liner Persia, he was one of 385 passengers and crew who perished when the ship sank (probably hit by a German torpedo), in the Mediterranean Sea, December 20, 1915. Burial location unknown.

I have found different dates of the sinking of the Persia ... but between the 20th and 31st December 1915

1915 December - The Germans torpedo the British liner Persia without any warning killing 335 passengers.

British passenger steamer Persia sunk without warning in the Mediterranean, American consul R. M. McNeely being drowned , with more than two hundred others.

1915 - During the First World War, a German submarine torpedoed the British liner Persia off Crete. At least 330 of the 501 passengers and crew were killed.
