I am researching the life of the Rev William J Finn, Chaplain 4th class, who was the first chaplain of any denomination to be killed in WW1. He died on V beach in 1916 on the first day of the landing of the SS River Clyde, having left the ship to provide spiritual comfort for his men, the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He was born in Hull and trained at the seminary Ushaw College. His immediate ministry prior to joining up was as priest at Houghton Hall, East Yorkshire and he petitioned his bishop twice before being granted permission to serve in the Army. Any information welcome
