My great-great-grandfather was killed in Virginia during the Civil War, but before that, he was imprisoned at Point Lookout in Maryland. America was simply not prepared to deal with housing large numbers of prisoners. I often shudder to realize how much my ancestor and others suffered in such a cold state without adequate food, clothing or even shelter. Many of them were confined to hastily constructed tents.
