I recently read an interesting report the details some of the military response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. A number of Guard units were activated, as well as others. I'm curious if anyone has recommendations for other material I might read on the topic.

P.S. The late Chris Kyle claims to have sniped from the top of the stadium in New Orleans. As far as I can tell, his claim is false. Anyone else read of this tale?

I knew some people got deployed, but I assumed it was to help. Do you suppose it could have been "just in case" the need arose for martial law?

Thanks for the note, LilAnn. I doubt it was for "martial law". My own brother, a member of the National Guard, was deployed there for relief efforts. His unit was bivouacked in the courtyard of a Baptist seminary and he reported back to our family as best he could.

Since posting the OP, I came across a document that is interesting, so I figured I'd pass it along: Hurricane Katrina: DOD Disaster Response

I do feel like they were sent there to help, but there was so much going on at the time, they probably wound up being a back up for the police. I know this is somewhat what was shown on the first season of the show Treme. There was a lot of crime and confusion. They had to piece together a lot of different issues that happened during that time.
