With the Confederate stronghold over the Mississippi at Vicksburg, how far did the Confederate Army actually extend west with any amount of strength… Texas, maybe farther?
There was the Battle of Picacho Pass, which was just outside of Tucson, Arizona. It really wasn't that much of a battle, just a handful of men on each side, but it's commonly recognized as the westernmost battle of the war.
That amazes me. I always have thought of the Mississippi being the final frontier for the Civil War. We normally hear about the larger battles, Vicksburg and such but rarely about the smaller conflicts!
You may also enjoy reading about "Bleeding Kansas" which actually preceded the outbreak of the Civil War, but was very much a part of the North vs. South conflict.
I'd say much farther than Texas. I actually feel that the South truly won...they were freaking ruthless. Google "Confederate + Torture" and see what comes up.
