One of my goals for my trip to Gettysburg last week was to meet or catch a glimpse of Ed Bearss. His name has come up for years every time I did intensive Civil War research. I knew he was going to be in town that day.

The morning I arrived, though, Ed collapsed on the field while giving a tour. He spent his 91st birthday in the hospital and I'm hoping for a full and successful recovery from surgery.

Ed was the Chief Historian of the NPS in the 80s and early 90s. He served with the Marine Corps in WWII and was wounded badly at Suicide Creek. Still hoping to catch him on the field sometime!
