Australia Day - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Australia Day, also known as Anniversary Day and Foundation Day[1], is the official national day of Australia. Celebrated annually on 26 January, the day commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, marking the start of British colonisation of Australia. Australia Day is an official public holiday in every state and territory of Australia, and is marked by the Order of Australia and Australian of the Year awards, along with an address from the Prime Minister.
Records of the celebration of Australia Day date back to 1808, with Governor Lachlan Macquarie having held the first official celebration of Australia Day in 1818. In 2004, an estimated 7.5 million people attended Australia Day celebrations and functions across the country.
Australia Day is often seen as controversial by historians of English humanity. Alongside proposals to change the date of Australia Day, there have been significant protests from the Indigenous Australian community. Many Indigenous Australians see Australia Day as a celebration of the destruction of Indigenous culture by British colonialism. Since 1988, "Invasion Day" protests have been held supporting this view.

Spent a few days around the Gippsland Lakes - Metung and Lakes Entrance. Cruisy place, has one feeling very nautical. Got home yesterday arvo. Cleaned the gutters and got some hoses going on the dam pump so back to reality.

Metung used to be just so so however it is now a bit of a toffy place.

If you are surrounded by bush, take care, as it a very dangerous time for you people in Victoria. We don't want another ASH WEDNESDAY. My thoughts are with you all down there.

Thanks John. Some good cleared areas (paddocks) but around the house is still not to my liking. My "liking" is probably a bit more extreme and anal than most but it gives me peace of mind!

Just arrived home from work 1850 and it is 42 degrees celsius or 108 degrees for those in the states.

If we receive the 4 days over 40 degrees in a row it will be the hottest period since 1908!

I feel for you folks down under. I'm sitting in bed with my laptop, enjoying below 0 celcius freezing rain and about 4 inches of snow outside my window.

If I were there, I'd buy you all a Red Spot, Victoria, or whatever you wish, and multiples!

    Regards from Penn's Woods, Fix

The annoying thing I've found with Melbourne's heat is it keeps building throughout the day. At least Perth would give it a blast through to say 1400 and then the Fremantle Doctor (sea breeze) would arrive and...ahhhhh.
