He was the first British fighter ace having 7 victories and the third pilot to win the Victoria Cross. He was shot down and killed on 23/11/1916 by the legendary Red Baron, Manfred von Richthofen, becoming his 11th kill. Also listed on the memorial is Major Edward ‘Mick’ Mannock, VC, DSO and two bars, MC and bar. His score is disputed but stands between 47 and 73. A famous fighter tactician, he was killed on 26/7/1918 by enemy ground fire.
