A very controversial episode where the reason for the commencement of the massacre is still unclear.

 

Sheer bloody rage would probably be very high up the list of reasons, I'd have thought.

 

I remember when I first saw that photo that was the impression I had. I find it very difficult to judge their actions.

There is a saying not usually associated with horrendous images like these.

"You just had to be there" and we weren't!

 

I think Lt Sparks' statement is very telling - a reaction rather than a decision

 

Like........He reacted to the situation then made a decision to act?

 

Premeditation?

 

Not before he walked through the gate anyway!

 

I think that's right, and important...those who compare it with the premeditated murders by the SS often forget that.

 

From what I am aware, they were not prepared for what was going to be on the other side of the gate.
