I am interested in reading more about the immediate effects on the economies after the Civil War in places like downtown Wilmington, North Carolina, which had been a thriving city in the decades leading up to the war. I want intimate details of people and family life rather than sweeping generalities about the economic effects. Can anyone suggest a good book or novel that offers such insight?
