We have a old confederate fort called Fort Fisher here in southern NC. It was a major port during the civil war. The Cape Fear River, which lead to the ocean, was a huge source of trade and cargo. This was a vital route for the confederates and they guarded it with this fort that was right on the water at the mouth of the river. Keep in mind this is no ordinary river. It extended to about 60 feet deep today to allow large ships to enter and exit. Check it out sometime if you head this way!
