    Australian Deaths in the RAAF/RAF. How did they occur? - Nigeria

    The reason for these threads is to have the official cause of death for these flyers if known, the number of the aircraft and to supply all detail and crew listings if available.

    Son of Harry Britain Borrett and Emily Eliza Borrett, of Mount Lawley, Western Australia.

    On 19 February 1943, Sgt Borrett and his crew participated in a mission to Wilhelmshafen Their Stirling I BF378 LS-T was piloted by New Zealander F/O Bernard Crawford, who would fly his first operational mission this night

    "Serial Range BF372 - BF416. 45 Stirling Mk.1. Part of a batch of 200 Short S.29 Stirling Mk.1/111/1V. BF309- BF358; BF372-BF416; BF434-BF454 (116) Mk.1; BF455-BF483; BF500- BF534; BF561-BF580 (84) Mk.111; BF464; BF468; BF532; Bf575; Bg580 were converted to Mk.111. Delivered by Short & Harland between Sep42 and Feb43. Contract No.774677/38. Initially delivered to No.7 Sqdn 17Sep42, to No.15 Sqdn 30Dec42. BF378 was one of three 15 Sqdn Stirlings lost on this operation. See: BF411; BF457. Reliable civilian sources in Holland indicate that all three of these Stirlings were shot down by Oblt Jabs, his claims being made at 2100 (BF457), 2114 (BF378) and 2145 (BF411) respectively Airborne 1735 19Feb43 from Bourn. Shot down by a night-fighter (Oblt Hans-Joachim Jabs, 1V./NJG2), and crashed in the Waddenzee. F/O Crawford is buried on Ameland in Nes General Cemetery; F/O Long is buried in Nes General Cemetery; F/L Long in Westdongeradeel (Wierum) Protestant Churchyard; Sgt Keeble is close by at Westdongeradeel (Nes) Protestant Churchyard, and Sgt Borrett is buried on Schiermonnikoog in Vredenhof Cemetery. The others are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.     Took off Lagos on Delivery Flight 474 to the Middle East, but failed to respond when the convoy leader ordered a return to base because of an inpending storm. Spun into ground 9 km north of Oshogdo, after entering the storm. All of the crew are buried in Oshogdo War Cemetery.
