About two years ago, someone presented to the Museum this aerial dart - apparently used by German airmen to drop over the trenches - by the handful I presume, circa 1915.
The battery is for scale purposes!

I'm trying to figure out what they would do .... they only look the size of fireworks ( or smaller !! )

They were purely darts; usually dropped from canisters containing a couple of dozen. Both sides tried them; they were supposed to be for use against cavalry, and there was blood-curdling propaganda of darts going straight through man and horse. But in fact, there is no evidence that anyone was ever killed by one, and the device was considered obsolete by mid-1915.

Adrian: there are two tiny holes in the dart. Any ideas as to their purpose?
