And some knitted socks .......

James Pappas remembers that his grandmother was always knitting. Now he knows why she did it. He recently came across a medal and citation the US Red Cross awarded to Mrs. Ricardo in 1918 for "service faithfully performed in behalf of the nation and her men in arms" during World War I. A separate press statement tells the rest of the story: "Mrs. Ricardo has knitted scores of socks, sweaters ... and other articles needed by the boys in the American camps and on the front in France." It's also good to remember that not everyone who serves the country wears a uniform.
