After living in NJ and eastern PA all my life, I finally visited Washington's Headquarters in Morristown.

The house itself is magnificent and in a splended state of preservation. It is palatial in comparison to the Potts House over in Valley Forge. A few Ford family artifacts were included in the room displays. Two that immediately come to mind were a dressing table and a secretary/desk. Our guide could not tell us if they were original to the house but they certainly look like they could have been from the time period.

I was a bit disappointed in our NPS guide, though. She did not appear to be all that knowledgable about the house's architecture and her Revolutionary War historical timeline was way off. It's scary to think about the misinformation she is passing on.  Strange, because any guides we've spoken with at Gettysburg and at Valley Forge have always been a treasure trove of information regarding the histories of the sites at which they work.

But a visit to the Morristown Headquarters is well worth the time and energy. Jockey Hollow is nearby also and between the two sites, there is plenty to see and to do.

Thanks for the report, Linda. This only makes me want to visit Morristown even more. I've never been there, and really want to go.

    Linda,

Glad you made the trek, and Morristown is a place I go when I need to get out of the house here. Not that far away, and a good place to recharge my batteries when needed.:)

Is the Visitors Center work completed ? When I was at Morristown in October the NPS was working out of a trailer and had a very small collection of books . When at Morristown about four years ago I remember a great collection of muskets displayed in the Visitors Center . Agree a very nice place to visit .

The NPS is still working out of that trailer. :-\

The Visitors Center is supposed to be finished some time this year but the park ranger with whom we spoke could not give us a definitive answer. On the outside, the building looks finished. My impression was that the holdup was folks trying to figure out how to best set the displays up. And, depending on the sizes of the egos involved, it could take a while.  ;)

I hope it's soon, though. I can't wait to get there!
