    This is one of a series of posts to mark the international Rugby players who served in, and survived, The Great War. If anyone has further information on the men concerned, I’d be most grateful if it could be added to the thread.

    Hinton, William Pearl (perhaps Peart?) played for Ireland

    Internationals: 16 : 1907 W- ; 1908 E- S+ (1c) W- ; 1909 E- S- ; 1910 E+ S- W- F+ ; 1911 E+ S+ (1c) W- ; 1912 F+ E- W+

    William Hinton was born on 27 October 1882.

    Played as a Full back for: Wesley College, Old Wesley; Barbarians

    Profession:

    Remarks: Played for the Barbarians: v Penarth (8-5) v Cardiff (0-17) v Devonport (9-0) in 1907; v Cardiff (5-6) v Exeter (17-11) in 1908; v Cardiff (9-16) v Swansea (8-12) in 1912. Refereed Scotland v France in 1921. President of the Irish Rugby Football Union 1920-1921. On 13 February 1921, as President of the IRFU, he laid a wreath at the London Cenotaph in memory of Irish Rugby players who fell during the War.

    War service: Second Lieutenant, 3rd Battalion, Royal Irish Regiment; later Captain.

    He died on 29 August 1953.
