What would you have done?

Many of us know the story of the Luftwaffe ace who not only let a critically damaged USAAF B17 escape, he escorted it to safety! While the German's action was definitely an admirable act of mercy, did he fail in his duty as a soldier? Many of his former comrades-in-arms apparently thought so as is attested to by the many phone calls that he received from them after he had moved to Canada after the war.
It's a fascinating story that reveals to us a side of the war that we often miss, and that is the countless little battles that never made it into the history books, but that affected the people that fought them throughout the rest of their lives.
But, back to my original question, what would you have done in the same situation?

Franz, I sure, was not suffering from " sore throat " and remained far from fishing medals. Another ace of the aces, had successfully been completed his training of the 'code of conduct'.
But I disliked the word ' pity ', tagged upon this rare Act, attached by Tony. I know at least you have a good listing of such acts been practiced in War2.
Frankly speaking, had I been there, my fingers could have ...
Sorry Pat, for pocessing such an inferior quality here, comparing Franz ..

I have read this story before and to answer your original question "What would you do?" I would hope that I would do the honorable thing and do as Stigler and help. Honor is more important than "winning" in my book.
