    This is one of a series of posts to mark the international Rugby players who served in, and survived, The Great War. If anyone has further information on the men concerned, I’d be most grateful if it could be added to the thread.

    Coates, Vincent Middleton Hope MC played for England

    Internationals: 5 : 1913 SA – W+ (1t) F+ (3t) I+ (2t) S+

    Vincent Coates was born on 18 May 1889.

    Played as a Wing for: Monkton Combe School, Haileybury & Imperial Service College, Cambridge University (Blue 1907), Bridgwater, Bath Leicester, Richmond, Barbarians, Somerset

    Profession: Medicine

    War service: Captain, Royal Army Medical Corps. He was awarded the Military Cross in the field during the Battle of the Somme – Gazetted 2 October 1916. Mentioned in Despatches.

    Remarks: Played for Barbarians: v Cheltenham (8-11) v Penarth (10-10) 1910. Somerset County Cricket Club.

    He died on 14 November 1934 at Maidenhead from a fall from a train.

    Thanks very much for your research. Unfortunately, I can't read the obituary - it prints out about 30mm x 50mm - is there a way of enlarging it?
