U.S. 83rd Chemical Mortar Battalion?

Discussion in 'World War 2' started by Ivan Stepanovich Konev, Apr 23, 2013.

  1. The Battalion took part in Operation Shingle (January 22, 1944) and landed with the northwestern U.S. Force ("Yellow Beach") at the port of Anzio in Italy. It has a very interesting but sad story.
The 4th Ranger Battalion, to which the 83rd was attached was virtually annihilated during a counterattack of the 1st German Parachute Corps at the Campoleone Salient and had to retreat in hurry. The 83rd became isolated in its fire position. Only a dozen out of 656 men made it back to friendly forces after three days of sneaking through rough mountainous terrain.
Didn't found out much from my research so far so would be very thankful if anyone knows anything about this incident.
