Never heard of before? See the movie: "1942". There was widespread mass hystria all along the West Coast of the US in early 1942. This is a partial explaination as to the subequent internment of the Japanese-Americans. And there was some reality upon which to base this, for there were one or two incidents of Japanese submaries making token "bombardments", and a submarine launched single-plane air raid.

This hysteria was also due to the prescient work of Homer Lea who wrote a book circa 1917 predicing the coming conflict in Japanese-American relations. He predicted a war at some unspecified point in the future who be inevitable, with an invasion of the West Coast at several points. I read his book some years ago and can not recall the title.

Oh, there were UFOs on the West Coast on the night of 23-24 Feb. 1942. By definition, here were unidentified flying (or at least aerial) objects. This does not mean there were extra-terrestial craft, just that there was something unidentified.
