Why did the King make it a policy not to open any war memorials ?

I read - that most of the ceremonies were usually performed by the Prince of Wales and the other Royal Princes and the King and Queen would visit later ( especially in Scotland ! )

At a guess, the monarch only unveils national memorials; ie The Cenotaph, Whitehall.
King George VI unveiled the Villers Bretonneux Australian Memorial.
King Edward VIII unveiled the Canadian National Memorial at Vimy Ridge.

    Protocol and precedent, I suppose.
