The Japanese apparently examined the attack on Taranto by the FAA and realised they could deliver a significant blow at Pearl Harbor. I've read this a number of times but am not sure whether it is just conjecture that has become "fact" as can only remember it in passing. The Japanese were certainly good students of air warfare so it sounds true!
Both the Japanese and the Americans analysed Taranto. There was a call amongst some at Pearl Harbor for torpedo nets to be put in place but were ignored. I can't remember where I read it but I believe that Yamamoto's Chief of Staff, Admiral Matome Ugaki. was actually in Taranto, or in Italy anyway, at the time of the attack, and so could report back with details.
