French Navy - Twenty Five Sailors who died in American Waters

    Commemorated in the Cypress Hills National Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York

    Does anybody happen to know anything about them .... ??

    The vessels were ......

    L'A.M.B.C. - Armement Militaire des Bâtiments de Commerce, merchant ship gunner (British DEMS or American Armed Guard)

    GLOIRE - Gloire-class armoured cruiser, launched 1900, 10,200 tons, spent war in Atlantic, finishing as convoy escort, collided with American liner City of Athens in May 1918, repaired in New York

    MARSEILLAISE - Gloire-class armoured cruiser, launched 1900, 9,500 tons, spent war in Atlantic, finishing as convoy escort

    MONTCALM - Gueydon-class armoured cruiser, launched 1900, 9,500 tons, completed refit in September 1916 and joined 4th Cruiser Squadron in West Indies, escorted Atlantic convoys from July to November 1918

    All I know annie is that 67 sailors in total lost their lives in the collision.

    Thanks Cally ! ... looks like the 25 all died of the "flu"

    Terrible though isn't it ... whichever way they died ??:(
