El Alamein hero to be honoured - Halifax Today

A DATE has been set to honour a Halifax soldier who was killed during the second world war.

Warrant Officer Harry Taylor, who has a war grave in Egypt where he died, will have his name added to Halifax Town Hall's Second World War memorial book during a small ceremony on July 18.

As the Courier reported in January, Mr Taylor, who grew up in Lee Mount before joining the Royal Army Service Corps at 23, was never commemorated in the book because his Halifax family only became aware of his death last year.

He was 40 years old when his convoy came under attack from German planes near El Alamein.

Since discovering the fact, his nephew Colin Wakefield, of School Lane, Illingworth, Halifax, has campaigning for his name to be included.

He said: "We're delighted this is finally coming to fruition. It's been a long time coming but at last Harry is to be remembered at home."
