    This is one of a series of posts to mark the international Rugby players who served in, and survived, The Great War. If anyone has further information on the men concerned, I’d be most grateful if it could be added to the thread.

    Hughes, Edward ‘Ned’ played for New Zealand

    Internationals: 6 : 1907 A+ (1t) A+ A= ; 1908 AW+ ; 1921 SA+ SA-

    Edward Hughes was born on 26 April 1881, in Invercargill.

    Played as a Hooker for: Southland, Wellington

    Profession: Cooper

    War service: 20156 Lance Corporal, NZ Rifle Brigade

    Remarks: Equal longest NZ career (with Colin Meads); 15 years between caps. Oldest NZ player to play in an international: 40 years 123 days in second test v SA 1921. NZ tour of Australia 1907. He played 9 matches for the All Blacks, including 6 Internationals. He joined the Rugby League and represented NZ in 1910; however, he regained his amateur status after the War.

    He died on 1 May 1928, in NSW
