    This is one of a series of posts to mark the international Rugby players who served in, and survived, The Great War. If anyone has further information on the men concerned, I’d be most grateful if it could be added to the thread.

    Jones, David Phillips (‘Ponty’) played for Wales

    Internationals: 1 : 1907 I+ (1t)

    David Jones was born on 10 December 1881 in Pontymoile.

    Played as a Wing for: Pontymoile, Newport, Pontypool, London Welsh, Monmouthshire, Barbarians

    Profession: Coal Merchant

    War service: South Wales Borderers.

    Remarks: Brother of J P ‘Jack’ Jones [1 cap] and J P ‘Tuan’ Jones [1 cap]. Anglo-Welsh tour of Australia and New Zealand 1908, and Great Britain Tour of South Africa 1910. He also played Association football and had a Welsh amateur trial. A broken hip ended his Rugby career in the 1911-1912 season. In addition to his sporting prowess, he was a professionally trained harpist.

    He died in 9 January 1936, in Llantarnam (now Llanfrechfa).

    David Phillips Jones more commonly known as 'Ponty' Jones (10 December 1881 – 9 January 1936) was a Welsh international rugby union wing player who played club rugby for several teams, most notably Pontypool and London Welsh. He won a single cap for Wales in 1907.
    Jones was a mining surveyer by profession and was also a classically trained harpist A keen sportsman, he also played soccer and once had a Welsh amateur trial. During the First World War he joined the British Army and served in the South Wales Borderers He died of pneumonia in 1936.
