War memorabilia lost in RSL fire - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) - fortunately no one was hurt. A Victorian town has lost all its war memorabilia after a fire destroyed the local RSL club. Firefighters were called to the Broadford RSL, north of Melbourne, overnight, but there was little crews could do to save the weatherboard hall. The Country Fire Authority's (CFA) Scott Hamilton says the blaze caused about $300-thousand damage to the building and destroyed its contents. "Being an old weatherboard structure as it was, the fire took hold very quickly," he said. "Our fire investigators and the police will obviously go through and sift through the ruins there and try and determine exactly what has caused the fire, how it's started and go from there." CFA firefighter Bruce Insley says he is devastated at not being able to save the hall. "There were medals from the First World War, Second World War, some flags from a member who had served with the UN and had been over in Iraq and Afghanistan, memorabilia from all the members who've passed on," he said.
