Betrayal of a hero: After his bomber crashed in WW2, it took 50 operations to rebuild Tom... only to be killed 66 years later by a hospital superbug| News | This is London

The aircraft in which I think he had his accident (though there are some discrepancies with the above article):

    Halifax II R9531 1658 HCU

T/O Riccall for a day cross-country(its crew was an unusual combination of air bomber, two wireless operatorsand three air gunners). At roughly 1300, the Halifax was seen flying quite low when it banked steeply and spun in near the North Lincolnshire steel town of Scunthorpe, damaging some civilian property and injuring a dozen people, either residing in the houses or who were in the immediate vicinty at the time of the accident. Service funerals for the two Commonwealth airmen, and Sgt Bonorino, formerly of the Royal Artillery, were held at Brigg Cemetery, while the others who died were claimed by their next of kin

    F/Sgt D C Cameron RCAF +
    Sgt R J Marshall +
    F/Sgt J C Macaulay +
    Sgt C F Bonorino +
    Sgt J A Barrett-Lennard RAAF +
    Sgt H G Jenkins +
Sgt R F Pretty injured (the anomoly with the name is throwing me, as is the fact that there weren't 9 in the crew)

Not fair, not right and an absolute disgrace if he died through neglect/incompetence/negligence.

Watch your mouth. The media love to jump on the "rundown NHS" bandwagon at every opportunity. I am not saying there is not a problem, but a lot of the stories of this sort are on the verge of hysteria. My wife was in the same hospital five years ago and had nothing but praise for the staff and the facilities. I concur with your comments, however.

Indeed, which is why I said "if" as the story did strike me as jumping to a few conclusions. Either way, we've lost another man who served his country in its time of need.

Firstly any avoidable death is a disgrace.

Secondly, sadly I think that some things have deteriorated even in the last five years.

Thirdly whilst I agree that the newspapers jump on the bandwagon, personally I hope they continue to shout loudly at ANY inadequacies which are uncovered, in the hope that NO lives are lost or maimed unnecessarily.

I could relate several recent personal / family experiences which indicate that the priority seems to have shifted in some areas from treating the patient to "ticking the boxes" - to achieve their targets?

Whilst my GP now receives a more realistic remuneration package it seems that his / her power to determine necessary treatment etc. is being eroded.

I always want to get stuck in and organise things for them but if John Harvey Jones and Gerry Robinson couldn't manage it .......
