Where there any ? I believe that some of the JU88/FW190 setups where captured during the latter stages of the War, but I might be wrong. Where any of these actually test flown by the allies (but not used as intended). I know that the Americans experimented with radio controlled 'cabriolet' versions of war weary B17's, stacked full of HE. Essentially, the roof was cut away, two dudes would start her up and take off, then flick a switch so that an accompanying '17 could take control, then they'd 'hop out' while still over England. I dont think this idea went operational as there where control issues and a few very big craters were made in some English fields. Where there ever any plans to use these tired bombers with a fighter piggybacked ? Over to you
There were plans for a similar weapon using the B-17: BQ-7 YouTube - Operation Aphrodite - 1940's Remote Control Airplane as Bomb and as for the German Mistel's captured by the British, I have attached details from Butler's "War prizes" (sorry about the edges - can't get the book flat enough)
This seems to explain why the Mistel idea wasn't explored to the degree it was in Germany. The missile was more the focus. The Evolution of the Cruise Missile http://stinet.dtic.mil/cgi-bin/GetTRDoc?AD=ADA162646&Location=U2&doc=GetTRDoc.pdf be patient as the file is large and takes time to load
Hi All, If I recall correctly, Joe Kennedy Jr. was killed in an "Operation Aphrodite" sortie. He was President John F. Kennedy's elder brother. Cheers Owen
Yes, he was in a B24 not a 17. I think the idea was to attack V1 launch sites, but the B24 blew up over England
