The bravery of World War Two bomber crews has been praised by Sir David Jason as he opened a new RAF exhibition in North Yorkshire.

The actor paid tribute to servicemen as he unveiled the display at Yorkshire Air Museum near York, which highlights the contribution of RAF crews in war.

The Against The Odds exhibition at the museum, a former RAF airfield, includes artefacts from Bomber Command.

About 900 crew from the Yorkshire were killed between 1939 and 1945.

'Pay tribute'

The Only Fools and Horses star, who is an honorary member of the museum and a keen flyer, met with war veterans who were involved in RAF bomber raids across Nazi Germany.

Museum Director Ian Reed said: "This exhibition is the result of several years very hard work and we are grateful for the help of Imperial War Museum in this venture."

During the bombings about 55,000 air crew from the UK were killed in action or as prisoners of war, together with a high number of civilian casualties.

Sir Jason said: "Places like this are very, very important. Not only for us but for future generations because we should pay tribute and remember those young people and young men and air crews who gave their lives for us to have the freedoms that we have."
