    ... the largest seaborne invasion in human history occurred. Soldiers from the allied nations of Britain, USA, Canada, Australia, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, (Free) France, Greece, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway and Poland faced the Third Reich in Festung Europa (Fortress Europe). There were at least 10,000 casualties, with 4,414 confirmed deaths on the Allied side. The Axis (Germany) suffered between 4 and 9,000 causalities. At last the Allies established a second front in Western Europe and the war in Europe ended less than a year later.

    It is a good time to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made on that day.
