Hi All, I have run into trouble with F/L Reginald Earle Creighton (Service record below) WW2 Nominal Roll It shows he was with 179 Squadron when he was discharged in Dec 1945. My problem is that he does not show up in the NAA records. I cannot find a Ops Report for the 179. Any suggestions ??? John
179 Squadron was RAF not RAAF, and only RAAF ORBs are available online. It was a coastal command squadron.
Was doing a whizz around for 179 Sqn and came across an obituary which I've posted here http://ww2chat.com/forums/obituaries/1944-avm-ronnie-knott-dso-dfc.html#post12567. Might give a bit of insight into their ops. I will check my 458 Sqn book tonight as their ops would have been similar so there might be a mention - not of Creighton though, sorry John, but it might help with context.
From my listing there are (13) RAAF "posting on death" with 179sq. You might like to look some of them up to show you there type of operations - Bay of Biscay etc. BEALE, HERBERT ELDON Pilot Officer 403021 179sq 21/01/1943 MAJOR, FOLLETT KEITH Flying Officer 403222 179sq 15/03/1943 McDONALD, DONALD LEO Flight Sergeant 405598 179sq 15/03/1943 PETTIGREW, WILLIAM Sergeant 405602 179sq 15/03/1943 GIBSON, IAN STUART Sergeant 409065 179sq 15/03/1943 WARNE, JOHN LUGTON Warrant Officer 410764 179sq 7/07/1944 WOOD, CEDRIC MILFORD Warrant Officer 412225 179sq 7/07/1944 HORE, SYDNEY ROSS Flight Sergeant 416856 179sq 17/01/1944 McGILVRAY, GEORGE ALPHONSUS Flight Sergeant 420980 179sq 17/01/1944 ANTHONY, RONALD DAVID Flight Sergeant 422529 179sq 17/01/1944 MARSHALL, LAURENCE WILLIAM Flying Officer 423803 179sq 20/03/1945 ANDERSEN, THOMAS MERVYN Flight Sergeant 425577 179sq 17/01/1944 BAKER, IVAN LESLIE Warrant Officer 432543 179sq 31/05/1945
Andy, Kyt and Spidge, Thank you for the websites and other info you have given me. What I can't understand is that NAA does not have any info re a service record, so I don't know when he joined 179 Sq. He had a nominal roll, so he must have some sort of service record. John
Hmm, this has got me stumped at the moment. He is definately RAAF. And I don't know of any cases where a record isn't listed, even if it hasn't been digitised.
Well I've tried searching by NoK, DoB, general service number, and by variations of name. Definately need to make contact with the NAA on that one.
Have checked Peter Alexander's We Find and Destroy, the 458 Sqn RAAF history, and it doesn't mention 179 at all.
Kyt and Andy, I am hopeful that NAA may find his record and therefor give me a starting point. Will post their answer when I receive a reply. Thanks again for the help you have both gave me John
