Why only infantry were sent in the first wave at Normandy landings?

    In April 1944, King George VI, Winston Churchill, General Eisenhower and Field Marshal Montgomery all visited Fort Henry at Studland, Dorset. They were there to watch an exercise involving DD Tanks swimming ashore, some sank and 6 men were drowned.
