Pershing was probably the strongest American tank during WWII. It was produced as a counter to German Panther and Tiger. It entered service very late in the war and only small numbers were produced. One of the photos I found at wikipedia about Pershing was a photo of a knocked out Pershing sitting on the road. It was said a German Tiger hit it 3 times in a row and knocked it out.
I agree with the Pershing, but as with the Comet that I suggested as the best British tank, it entered service only at the end of the war, saw little combat, so it could be argued that both Comet and Pershing should not be considered. So if we ignore the Pershing we must go for the M4 Sherman, and if we ignore the Comet as well, I would go for the Cromwell ahead of the Churchill.
The Sherman-not through any great qualities of firepower or armor, but because there were so MANY of them.It was'nt the best tank in the world by any means, but we out produced the Germans, and got the job done.
