After the Civil War it started out with a great reconstruction plan in place. They could of rapidly built back the nation to where it belonged. Plus while many people in the south were racist, since they didn't own slaves, the government could of probably worked with them to help them also promote "no-slavery".

However, after President Lincoln who was supposed to be the supervising manager on the reconstruction was soon killed. After that, within a few years all soldiers were withdrawn from the South. Because of this the South was allowed to rapidly go back to it's old ways. What do you think?

Well the reason they withdrew the Union soldiers from the South was because of some political agreement between the Republicans and the Democrats regarding the winner of the next presidential election. Lincoln probably would've been soft with the South too even if he had not been assassinated. He originally planned to quickly readmit the Southern states as friendly and as simply as possible in order to brush up the mess. Therefore, the South would've had it easy after the war either way. It was the radical Republicans in Congress who wanted to punish the South instead as they blamed them for causing the war.
