I'm pulling this out of thin air, but is that down in South Carolina?

Nope. Not South Carolina. You need to travel further north to reach this place. ;)

    Bob,

NJ is not that pretty...Trust me. ;) Site has to be near the Great Lakes up North, but that's all I know.

    Hope all is well.

    Regards from the Garden State,

Damn, Steve, you're right on the money. That photo was of the north redoubt and the Millet Cross at a particular fort on one of the Great Lakes. Does that help?

This is another photo from that same fort. This building was called the "French Castle":

Anyone able to figure out the fort name from those two photos? ;)

Ah. Well here's a picture I have of a fort with a building called the "French Castle"

I would say it's Fort Niagara in Youngstown, New Yew. Upriver from Ft. George.

And the winner is.......Bob Hall!! Thanks for posting your photo. It's kind of neat seeing it from the water. :)

Yes, it's Fort Niagara. It's definitely worth visiting if you're ever in the area. I was surprised at how publicly accessible the buildings were. Yes, there were rooms with displays in the buildings that were cordoned off to the public (you had to peek through a doorway) but there were many rooms that were not. For example, this room, called the "Johnson Room" is located in the French Castle. I had walked in from the door you see in the corner to get in the room. Notice there is nothing keeping you from sitting on any of the chairs. Of course the furniture was all repros but just try sitting on any of the repros in the McConkey Ferry building in Washington Crossing...that's a no-no...LOLOLOL.

We visited on a weekday and had the place practically to ourselves. The fort is dog-friendly so you can bring your dog with you. There were no signs on the buildings stating that you were not allowed to bring your dog inside, but we just couldn't being ourselves to do it so we took turns.

I probably wouldn't have guessed it even with more pictures since I've never seen in up close. When you said "French Castle", that gave it away since I remember seeing that mentioned while researching Ft. George vs Ft. Niagara action. Hopefully we'll find our way up there in the next few years. The pic I posted was taken about 3 weeks ago. Below is a panoramic shot I stitched together. It was taken in March 2004.

This shot was taken the same day as above, but from a slightly different angle, basically 'upriver'. I found a trail from Ft. Mississauga and I followed it down to the lake shore. From there I took this pic.

Speaking of Ft Mississauga, this is it. Ft. Niagara would be be to my right at this angle.

Thanks for posting those, Bob. It is REALLY neat to see that fort from another vantage point. Fort Niagara definitely looks to in a better state of restoration than Fort Mississauga is, though. We didn't have enough time to see that one.

The year I took those photos we were visiting the area for 5 days and that was the only sunny day we had. We headed to Niagara Falls the next day and it was raining. Though, when you go to Niagara Falls it really doesn't matter if it rains or not because either way you get wet. :D
