Got him to-day. A local told me that someone still tends his grave and every year on Remembrance day a small wreath of poppies is placed at his grave. I wonder if he has connections with UK as Hall is a common name in the Wickham Market area. Need your e-mail addy again Spidge.

Really difficult to park anywhere near this cemetery Spidge, its very near to the centre of Reading but i will see what i can do for you. I think i have the other one at Caversfield but will have to find it and scan it onto the computer as it is a paper pic. The Caversfield cemtery is now on private land and is very difficult to access as there are guard dogs around the grounds. Will be heading into the attic later to go through the pics for you after i have taken her ladyship for a walk across the Ridgeway.

    Hi Mike,

Yes Runnymede is completed. These were predominantly the Aussies in the RAF who I researched as being Australian.

    Cheers

I have a photograph of the original grave of Norman Ford, 2nd Lt, 100 sqn RAF who died on 5 April 1918. He was buried first at the cemetery at Mailly le Camp and the graves were later transferred to Fere Champenoise. if you are interested in the photo or any biographical information on Norman please contact me - eleanorm@optusnet.com.au

    Hi Eleanor,

Welcome to the forum. Thankyou for the kind offer of the photo and biographical information on 2nd Lt Norman Ford. I run the project called 'The Commonwealth Roll of Honour Project which is aimed at people like yourself, family historians, military historians etc and try to provide them with a free service by providing them with information of service personnel who have died during service to the Commonwealth, which of course would include a photo of their headstone if i have one available. I have checked on my database and i don't seem to have a copy of Norman's headstone so i would be very interested in recieving a copy along with any information you may have on him.

I see you live in Oz, would you be interested in visiting some of your local cemeteries and taking photos of any Commonwealth service personnel's headstone for the project? If you are could you please PM me and i will provide you with any casualties details that i have. I don't have a list yet of the Aussies that are buried In Oz so i'm not sure how many there will be buried near to you but you could find that out from the CWGC website by just typing in the name of the cemetery's in your area.

Any help you can give me would be very welcome. Again welcome to the forum and please have a look around the other forums we have here. We also have a sister site called WW1Talk if your interested in joining us over there as well here is the web address. http://ww1talk.co.uk/forum.phpWW1 Talk Hope to see you over there.

This is the information on Norman Ford.

Norman Ford was born on 23 September 1890 at Cooktown, Queensland. He was the son of Eleanor Ann Louisa Lee and Edward Robert Ford.

He studied at the Charters Towers School of Mines and his occupation before the war was a miner.

On 14 August 1914, he enlisted in the AN&MEF and sailed for New Guinea on the Kanowna. The stokers on the Kanowna refused to stoke the boilers so the men were sent home and discharged on 18 September. After that Norman went to work in the gold mines in the Gold Coast (West Africa). He was there for most of 1915 and part of 1916. He then went to Officers Training School at the University of London and graduated as a second lieutenant.

According to his medals record, he was in the RE, RFC and RAF. He first saw action in France on 16 December 1916.

He was transferred to the RAF and flew two sorties with 100 bomber squadron in March 1918 as observer. He was killed in a flying accident on 5 April 1918 when his squadron was based at Villesneux. Norman was buried in grave 39 at the cemetery at Mailly le Camp. In 1932, four graves from there, including Normans, were moved to the Fere Champenoise cemetery.

I have photos of his grave at Mailly le Camp and now thanks to Spidge of his grave at Fere Champenoise. I don't know how to attach them to this but if you contact me via email I can send them to you. I'll check out the CWGC website for cemeteries in my area (Sydney) and let you know.

    best wishes
    Eleanor
