9 Nov. 2014, will mark the 25th anniversary of the Berlin Wall's destruction by demolition in 1989. My German is a little rusty but from what I read in one of their newspapers, there will be a ceremony at the memorial on the anniversary date. The memorial was dedicated in 1961 as a memory of a separated Germany.
I actually had to go check to be sure you didn't typo with a number. Talk about a shocker... 25 YEARS?! Uh, I mean... sheesh! Oh, I knew it was Reagan and Gorbachev so yeah, it had to be the late 80s but that number standing alone like that took a moment to digest!
I know exactly what you mean. I first heard it on FOX but I didn't catch any elaboration. So, I went to the net and found a couple things but then I came upon a few German news publications. I picked one out and got the whole low down. It doesn't seem that long ago but I guess it is true that time does go by when you're having fun. I remember seeing pictures of the people with the sledge hammers trying to chip it up. Later, some folks even sold some of the rocks for a decent price! Those were some pretty good days. I felt a whole lot more secure then. It's sad.
09 Nov. 2014 A bit of irony in the news this morning. They were showing part of the ceremony at the Berlin Wall Monument. 25 years ago today, the wall came down signifying the reunification of Germany. Because of monetary and political stress the U.S.S.R. had to relinquish it's hold on Eastern Germany. Now, 25 years later, in the news also, the Russian monetary system took a hit this week wherein the Ruple is only worth 47 cents on the dollar. But, while that may be true, Russian tanks moved in on the Ukraine border again. Like I said.......a little irony.
