I don't know too much about rifles but I believe the Springfield was a good sniper's rifle but a little delicate for trench warfare.

The SMLE is usually considered the best WW1 rifle; I don't say that because I am British but because it was the best all-rounder - rugged, reliable, a good bolt action so a high rate of fire and with telescopic sights, a competent sniper's weapon. It was used throughout WW2 and some of the Kuwaitis still had them in the Gulf War of 1991.

When the British Expeditionary Force halted the German advance (temporarily) at Mons on August 23rd 1914, their rate of fire was so high that the Germans greatly over-estimated the number of machine guns in use.
