Another good article by Mike Kemble.
The Russian sub S13 was responsible for the sinking of this ship.

    Wilhelm Gustloff, 10,000 dead?

A dreadful business. And ironic that the Germans who started unrestricted submarine warfare should suffer so heavily because of it.

A good thing they were never able to torpedo HMT Queen Mary or Queen Elizabeth - they sometimes carried 16000 people when used as troopships during the war. They relied on their speed to avoid the U-boats; a gamble but fortunately a successful one.
